‘Mawita’jig’, meaning ‘to gather’, came from a place of reminiscing about community and family. This painting depicts the silhouette of a caribou ‘qailpu’, carrying six individuals shown as shadows within a wigwam. Caribou are very special creatures, especially in Newfoundland, where my community is. I wanted this painting to celebrate food, community and nature, and how we all need these things to thrive as a people. Food brings up together without words, nature is a voice for us when there isn’t one, and community is what lifts us up to be better, and do better for both ourselves, and those around us.
All reproduction prints are produced locally in close collaboration with a professional artist and experienced printmaker to ensure faithful colour and detail.
